Where Confidence Begins: How Camp No Limits Transforms Lives 

For two decades, Camp No Limits has stood as a place where children with limb differences and their families discover new abilities, new friendships, and a sense of belonging. Camp No Limits started with just a few campers at a small camp in Maine but has since grown into a nationwide network of support for children and their families. Today, Camp No Limits is the Hanger Foundation’s original Signature Grantee. 

Mary Leighton, Founder and Executive Director of Camp No Limits, attributes their growth to support from the Hanger Foundation, saying, “The Hanger Foundation grant has allowed over 500 families to attend camp over the last several years. It’s really allowed us to reach as many kids and families as possible.”

For many campers, Camp No Limits is more than a camp; it’s a life-changing experience.

Anna and Ivy Cosgrove first attended Camp no Limits at ages 4 and 5, respectively. The two sisters remember the excitement of discovering they weren’t alone. Anna says about her experience, “Camp No Limits has impacted my life by showing me I’m not the only one with my struggles.”

From wheelchair basketball to scaling a rock wall, adventure and discovery are central to the experience. Each Camp No Limits camper has the opportunity to participate in both occupational therapy and physical therapy, as well as a peer support group for siblings, campers, and parents.

Their mother, Jennifer Cosgrove, says Camp No Limits built her daughter’s independence, “We reached the last day and realized we didn’t know where they were… It meant they felt empowered and confident enough to go off without mom.”

For Leighton, those moments of “firsts” are what makes the work meaningful. “When I see campers try something for the first time, tying a shoe, riding a bike, climbing a wall, it may seem small in the moment, but it leads to lifechanging events in the future.”

Every year, she watches families arrive feeling uncertain and leave transformed.

“It is amazing to see families come to camp holding their heads down and leave with their heads held high — empowered and inspired for what’s next.”
