Diversity Scholarships
Furthering Our Mission, Building for the Future
In January 2021, the Hanger Foundation launched the Hanger Foundation Diversity Scholarship program as part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion in the orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) profession. The program diversifies the Foundation’s offerings, while still committing to advance communities by supporting charitable organizations that help people with limb loss, limb difference, and other physical challenges.
The scholarships supplement the cost of the two-year Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (MSPO) program and offer a two-year mentorship with the option of pursuing a residency with Hanger Clinic. Every fall, the Hanger Foundation issues the scholarships directly to several universities across the nation to help recruit underrepresented students into the O&P profession.
The Diversity Scholarship program aims to:
- Equip students from diverse backgrounds with the tools they need to successfully pursue a career in the O&P profession.
- Attract more diverse candidates to O&P graduate programs by raising awareness of MSPO program offerings at the undergraduate level.
- Build a more inclusive profession to better serve all.

Inaugural John Daniel Shay Memorial Scholarship
After a fierce battle with leukemia, John Daniel Shay, son of Hanger Clinic Manager Curi Poulin, passed away on December 13, 2023, at age 20. A dedicated scholar with a passion for mathematics and computer science, John excelled throughout his academic career. He led his high school Lego Robotics team to victory and graduated with high honors, which earned him a STEM scholarship.
At the time of his passing, John was completing a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Maine Orono with aspirations to pursue a PhD. As a tribute to John’s lifelong passion for education, the Hanger Foundation is establishing the John Daniel Shay Memorial Scholarship.
About the Scholarship
This $10,000 scholarship will support students pursuing their masters in orthotics and prosthetics who share John’s passion and dedication to their academic and personal growth. We invite you to join us in celebrating John’s life and legacy by contributing to this scholarship fund. Your generous donation will help ensure that John’s spirit continues to inspire and support future generations of O&P students.
